New and Back in Stock Products
We have lots of exciting news to share! First, we have all of your favorite products from Uncle Harry’s back in stock, such as jojoba cream, African black soap (amberfruit scent), & whitening toothpaste polish. In addition, we are now carrying African black soap (ylang ylang scent) and unscented Oatmeal and Coconut soap powder for all your travel needs.
We are also selling California Lives t-shirts to supports California state parks. With California Lives, we have the opportunity to assist our parks, beaches and lagoons from succumbing to corporate interests, but also to see them operated with proper facilities and maintenance, and a respect toward growing these great areas for the benefit of future generations.
Finally, we have expanded the amount of amazing can art we have from 3RSAL. Joining the geckos we had previously featured, we now have jewelry, cars, planes, motorcycles, wind and kite surfers, insects, a giraffe, and a toilet paper holder… all crafted from metal soda and juice cans. Put one in your house and smile!
Bottle Busting
To date, we have refilled 400 containers, translating into a substantial amount of waste we have kept out of the landfills. We thank you for helping us make this happen and ask that you help us continue making our world a cleaner place.
Spreading the Word
I’ve been driving all over San Diego letting people know about Earthwell Refill. Last month, I participated in a health panel at the Kuumba Fest held at the Lyceum Theater in Horton Plaza. Eathwell Refill was well received and I met folks from San Diego Urban Beats. Urban Beats is an organization that helps high-risk teenagers channel their energies and express themselves through art and poetry. I also attended the Zero Waste Symposium held at the Jacob Center for Innovation. The event was a great place to meet like-minded individuals who want to reduce the amount of plastic and waste in their lives. The symposium focused on businesses who apply the Zero Waste approach to their bottom line. Presenters included representatives from Dr. Bronner’s Soap, Second Chance Beer Company, and ReUse 4 Good. Second Chance Beer Company, located in Carmel Mountain Ranch, not only offers Fix It Clinics, but also reclaimed many of the furniture in their taproom from the old Rock Bottom Brewery downtown. Instead of throwing out their large grain bags, they re-purpose them as trash bags. They also send their used grains to a farmer for animal feed.
ReUse 4 Good keeps old office furniture and supplies from the landfills and finds new homes for them in schools.

New Art from Joe Phillips & Virginia Howlett
New to grace our walls this month is some fabulous marine animal art by Joe Phillips. I’ve known Joe for years, since the days of WildStorm comics in La Jolla. Joe’s gone on to be a major artist with all the major comic companies, all the while publishing his own projects, drawing calendars, sculpting action figures, doing costume design… if it’s art, he does it. These 3D, handpainted pieces have to be seen live to be appreciated, and are very attractively priced at only $30 per piece. We also have a huge fish piece made of foam for $60, and various black & white paintings for $100 per piece. Treat yourself to a visual feast.
With great pride, we also feature stunning cloudscape paintings by artist Virginia Howlett from now until mid-May. Four pieces grace our walls. Ask for pricing.
A local resident for part of each year, Virginia received an BFA with Distinction from Ohio State University and an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Formerly an Assistant Professor of Painting at Hampton University and at New Mexico Highlands University, Virginia won a Mellon Foundation grant to create artwork in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Virginia creates her work at an island cabin in British Columbia and in her San Diego studio. Her exhibitions include shows in San Diego, Seattle, New Mexico, Virginia, Ohio and Chicago.
