Nature Bunny Says Vol. 4

Kris and I would like to send our heartfelt gratitude to all the friendly people who have entered our store and our lives. We are happy that we can offer 100% natural body care and household products while helping to reduce the amount of plastic that goes into our landfills. We have met some really cool people, from muralists to composters to the Silver Surfer, and heard great stories about our neighborhood. It has always been a dream of mine to have a store where I could share my experiences and learn from others. Plus, I am crazy about soaps, lotions, and the medicinal properties of plants, so ta da, a year ago today, we decided to open Earthwell Refill.

Zero Waste Lifestyle, according to Wikipedia, is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. No trash is sent to landfills or incinerators. The process recommended is one similar to the way that resources are reused in nature. By visiting Earthwell Refill, you are participating in this consciously chosen lifestyle. We understand that consciously deciding to forego convenience is hard; but each step towards this goal has a positive effect on the environment and especially your personal well-being.

I Love a Clean San Diego

Last month I attended I Love A Clean San Diego’s Zero Waste Fair at Ocean Knoll Farm in Encinitas. I gave out free hand soap and promoted the store. I really enjoy these events where you meet like-minded people and widen perspectives. They had a booth where a bicycle was connected to a blender. Everyone had a chance to ride the bicycle to power a blender to make delicious smoothies.

Over 60 people attended this event including Monica Rosquillas from “A Girl for a Clean World” blog who shared her experience traveling through East Asia while maintaining a zero-waste lifestyle. The City of Encinitas handed out reusable containers to use instead of styrofoam to carry your leftovers from restaurants.

New Product Testers

Since more people have started talking about us, we have received sample items to test. This past month we asked four adventurous customers to try out Organic Essence Scrub Butter as well as I Love Tanige’s laundry paste, which can be described as a laundry bouillon cube. Maybe next time you come in the shop we’ll ask you to be a guinea pig.

Reducing Before We Recycle!

To date, we have refilled over 850 containers - pat yourself on the back for making this happen!

Introducing Earthwell Refill Health Talk

On August 2nd, at 6:30pm, our licensed massage therapist, Jasmine Cherry, will give a talk on the benefits of massage coupled with yoga. We will also have a raffle.

Do-It-Yourself Recipes

Sun Protection: If you haven’t heard, we now carry non-nano zinc oxide. Non-nano zinc oxide is the best broad spectrum UVA and UVB reflector approved for use as a sunscreen by the Food and Drug Administration. This is because non-nano zinc oxide does not absorb into the skin when applied with a lotion. Instead it sits on top of the skin and reflects both UVA and UVB light. Because it isn’t absorbed into the skin, it doesn’t irritate or cause allergic reactions.

By adding 2-7 tablespoons of zinc oxiden (depending on the level of protection you desire) to 12 oz of any cream or lotion that is not citrus based, you can protect your skin from the sun’s UVA rays. We offer a variety of non-citrus based lotion for your convenience. We sell non-nano zinc oxide for $1.39/oz.

Mosquito Repellent: By mixing neem oil and coconut oil in equal proportions you can make an effective bug repellent. Evidently mosquitos don’t like the smell of neem. The repellent last for at least 8 hours. We sell neem oil for $.69/oz and coconut oil for $.79/oz.
