Did you know that to reuse and refill is better for our planet than to recycle? According to an article published last year in National Geographic, 91% of plastics designated to be recycled are not recycled. In fact, since China is no longer buying many of our used paper or plastic items, many of our “recycled items” are finding their way into our landfills. It appears that we haven’t been educated properly about what can go into our recycling bins in order for them to be properly recycled. For instance, we cannot recycle used cardboard pizza boxes, since many times there are traces of grease on the cardboard. Make sure that all glass containers and metal cans are rinsed out before being placed in the recycle bin. So our mantra continues to be reduce, reuse,and then recycle.
